NOW Fall 2022 “pop-up” festival call for scores

New Opera West is currently accepting composer submissions for our fall, 2022 “pop-up” festival opera performance in Los Angeles.

Criteria:

  • Open to all composers regardless of age or nationality.

  • Opera scenes of about 5-10 minutes in length.

  • The scene may be on any topic.

  • Text must be primarily in English.

  • Scenes may be excerpted from a longer piece, but they must stand on their own with a complete, coherent dramatic arc.

  • About 2-5 characters of standard voice type (soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone) in any combination. It is best if each character is a distinct voice type, but it’s not required.

  • Piano accompaniment. New this year: a few additional instruments may be incorporated for the fall festival. The selected composers will have the option to score their scene for some or all of these additional instruments once they are determined.

  • Scores incorporating electronics will be considered. (We will be limited to simple playback of electronically generated audio. Selected composers who incorporate electronics are expected provide audio recordings.)

  • Any staging requirements should be minimal. There will be minimal sets, and props should be limited to easily acquired items.

Application:

  • There is no application fee.

  • Score should be in PDF format. Ideally, scores should be notated in Finale, Sibelius, or a similar computer notation program.

  • If possible, include an mp3 audio recording (MIDI realization acceptable).

  • Deadline is August 15, 2022.

  • Selected composers will be notified in early September.

  • PDF scores and audio files should be sent to: newoperawest@gmail.com with “[LAST NAME, FIRST NAME]: NOW Fall 2022 Pop-up” in the subject line.

    • Example: SMITH, EMMA: NOW Fall 2022 Pop-up

Any questions may be submitted to newoperawest@gmail.com.
